Situated at the southern end of Georgian Bay's 30 000 Islands, Midland is the economic centre of the region and is the main town of the southern Georgian Bay area.

History of Midland, Ontario

The town of Midland was founded when, in 1871, the Midland Railway of Canada selected the sparsely populated community of Mundy's Bay as the new terminus of the railway. The town site was surveyed in 1872 and the line to the town was completed by 1879. Business growth continued to the point that the village status was upgraded to incorporation as a Town on January 6, 1890.

Midland has many internationally known tourist attractions, some of which include the only Catholic shrine of pilgrimage in Ontario, the Martyr's Shrine, the largest collection of fresh water islands in the world (30 000 of them!), the first recreated Indian Village in Canada and the largest collection of outdoor murals in Canada, just to list a few! Midland 30,000 Islands Boat Cruise is also worth checking out, it's a sightseeing cruise aboard the 300-passenger Miss Midland, experience the windswept pines and rocky grandeur of Muskoka-Georgian Bay's 30,000 islands. Seeing all of what Midland has to offer will take more than a day, there are many quality accommodations in the area for those wanting to spend the night.

Midland's municipal government is represented by a Mayor, Deputy Mayor, three Councillors representing Ward 1, three Councillors representing Ward 2 and one Councillor representing the 3rd Ward. The regular meeting of Council is held at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month.
